Introduction to Upstream Processing Operations

Overview

This blended course of 2 mornings online theory and 2 days NIBRT onsite practicals introduces the typical upstream operations carried out in a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.  

 This course delivers online theory covering cell culture, upstream processing, and bioreactor control for biopharmaceutical manufacture. The hands-on practical days in NIBRT compliment this theory with practical sessions covering cell culture and aseptic technique, operation of disposable rocking and stirred-tank reactors, and stainless-steel reactors. These sessions will be utilised to reflect upstream operations in biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.  

The full course of online theory and practicals can be taken or there is an option to take the online lectures only.

  • An overview of the key upstream processing unit operations of biopharmaceutical manufacture. 
  • Cell culture activities including aseptic technique, vial thaw, culture and scale up. 
  • Bioreactor set up including disposable rocker and stirred tank bioreactors and stainless-steel bioreactor operations.
