Heartland BioWorks, Indiana, USA
Heartland BioWorks (HBW), led by the Applied Research Institute (ARI), is a federally funded Regional Tech Hub in Indiana dedicated to advancing the United States’ biomanufacturing workforce, innovation capacity and manufacturing leadership. HBW brings together a broad coalition of partners, including ARI, BioCrossroads, Eli Lilly and Company, Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue University and others, to strengthen one of America’s most dynamic and rapidly expanding life sciences ecosystems. Together, these partners are working to ensure the region has the talent, infrastructure and capabilities needed to remain globally competitive.
As a member of the NIBRT Global Partners Programme, Heartland BioWorks will exclusively deliver NIBRT’s internationally recognised biopharmaceutical manufacturing training across the US Midwest. This collaboration will bring world-class, industry-aligned training directly to the region—providing hands-on, practical experience with modern bioprocessing technologies and equipping learners with the skills required to step into high-demand biomanufacturing roles. Training will be available across Indiana ahead of the 2027 opening of the purpose-built BioWorks Headquarters located in Indianapolis, IN, which is being designed in partnership with NIBRT to replicate real-world bioprocessing environments.
For the region, the partnership represents a transformational opportunity. By significantly expanding access to specialised biomanufacturing training, Heartland BioWorks will help meet the increasing workforce needs of local and national employers, support industry growth, and contribute to the resilience of the biopharmaceutical supply chain. It will also strengthen Indiana’s position as a central hub for biomanufacturing excellence by attracting investment, fostering innovation, and enabling more individuals to pursue meaningful, future-focused careers in the life sciences sector.
This work marks an important new chapter for Indiana and underscores the collaborative commitment of ARI and its partners to building a skilled, sustainable, and industry-ready workforce that can support the long-term growth of the biomanufacturing industry across the Midwest and beyond.
